And so we’re off again. Over the past seven years, I have overseen training on several large technology implementations. On my current project, my client is implementing SAP, a technology program used to manage all of the organization’s processes - and every one of its 7,500 employees, across 40+ sites, is impacted.
Building a training program of this size is like juggling about a dozen balls at the same time. Even after you’ve applied the best instructional design principles and hired the most engaging trainers ever to grace the world of SAP training, your computers could die, your network connection could fail, your SAP training client could hang up, trainers could travel to the wrong location or have their flights cancelled, the printer could fail to deliver your course materials, the room may be too warm or too cold…you get the picture.
It’s kind of like producing the Oscars. On screen, the actors – or in my case the trainers stand before the audience and deliver their practiced lines with grace and panache, hopefully to loud applause and approval. Behind the scenes, people like me are scurrying around like rats making things happen. We’re not really important in the grand scheme of things…unless of course something goes wrong. My goal is to always make sure I remain behind the scenes – in addition to making sure that the applause keeps going.
